The small market
town of Pateley Bridge is the 'capital' of Nidderdale. The 'Oldest
Sweet Shop in England' which was founded in 1827 can be found here.
Well worth a visit is the Nidderdale Museum which is housed in a former
workhouse is well stocked with exhibits depicting rural life in
Nidderdale and the surrounding area.
A railway served Pateley Bridge until 1964 when it was closed as part of the "Beeching Axe".

The Nidderdale
Show held in September is one of the last agricultural shows in the
North Yorkshire
calender. Sometimes known locally as the Pateley Feast or Nidderdale
Rant, the show features the usual exhibits of livestock, farmyard
machinery, produce, trade stands and entertainment for all the family.
The show takes place on the 'morrow of the Feast of the Nativity of the
Blessed Virgin Mary' which is the Monday following the first Sunday
after (but not on) the 17th of September, therefore it does not take
place before 19th September.
