Valley Entrance, Kingsdale Master Cave

Ease of access makes Valley Entrance one of the most visited caves in the Yorkshire Dales. Entrance is via an oil drum by the side of the Kingsdale road, negating the need for a long walk to the cave, common in the Dales. Secondly Valley Entrance is also the end of several through-trips that can be undertaken in this system.
The Roof Tunnel is an easy walk with stooping for over 330 yards (300m) from the oil drum entrance to the 20 foot (6m) pitch into the Kingsdale Master Cave. Downstream from the pitch the Master Cave ends in a sump with the water re-emerging at Keld Head. The sump also connects with King Pot in east Kingsdale, making it the longest underground dive in the U.K.
Upstream from the pitch the Master Cave is a spectacular underground canyon which lowers towards the top end where water enters from Swinsto Hole and Rowten, Simpson's and Jingling Pots.
Through trips from Swinsto Hole and Simpson's Pot are popular with the abseil rope being rigged for pull-through. To enable a safe exit from Valley Entrance is is necessary to rig the pitch from the Master Cave into the Roof Tunnel beforehand although the pitch can be free climbed, this is not recommended.
Through trips from Rowten Pot via the sumps are also possible. Although the sumps are not long free diving is not advisable.
