Hoffman Lime Kilns

Hoffman Lime Kilns

Village north of Settle in Ribblesdale.  Situated on the east bank of the River Ribble Stainforth was once owned by Sawley Abbey near Clitheroe whose monks developed the estate which prospered while Little Stainforth on the opposite side of the river declined.  A short walk from the village the Ribble falls through Stainforth Force.
The local church is St. Peters and there is a pub, the Craven Heifer.
Perhaps Stainforth's best feature are the Hoffman Lime Kilns which are located in a wood not far from the village.  These huge lime kilns consist of tunnels and portals which can be entered.
