SAWLEY ABBEY Sawley Abbey Sawley
Abbey is the remains of a Cistercian Monastery that was founded in 1147
by William de Percy and colonised by monks from Newminster Abbey in
Northumbria. The abbey is destroyed during the King Henry VIII's
Desolution of the Monasteries in 1536. Sawley Abbey is maintained
by English Heritage and admission is free. The abbey is open
seven days a week from 10am until 5pm (4pm during the winter) except
for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
