PENDLE HILL
Pendle Hill
Separated
from the rest of the Forest of Bowland by Clitheroe and the A65 is the
Forest of Pendle and Pendle Hill, home to the infamous Witches who were
tried and hanged in Lancaster in 1612 for the murder of ten people
allegedly by witchcraft.

This small
area of upland between Clitheroe and the mill towns of Burnley, Nelson
and Colne has a surprising feel of remoteness about it. It's summit
is 1827 feet (557m) above sea level, not the highest point in
Lancashire, (Gragareth at 2060 feet (628m) is the highest) but it is
certainly the most prominent hill in the county. Because of it's
Witch connection Pendle Hill has been the scene of Hallowe'en
celebtations but in recent years people have been discouraged from
climbing the hill during Hallowe'en.
