NEWCHURCH IN PENDLE
Newchurch in Pendle Small
hilltop village not far from Barley south of Pendle Hill. Home to
the Demdike family of Pendle Witches who lived here in the 17th century
the village was once called Newchurch in Pendle Forest and
previously Goldshaw Booth which is the modern name for the parish
which includes the hamlets of Spen Brook and Sabden Fold.
The ancient ceremony of rushbearing has been performed here every August since 1649. |
