The Village
5 miles (8km) east of Hawes is the village of Askrigg, featured in the long running television series, All Creatures Great and Small. The village is also known for it's clock-making and knitting. Set in the cobbles in the village square by the market cross and stone pump is an ancient bull-baiting ring. It was a custom for a man who wanted a fight to turn the bull ring over and a potential challenger to turn it back, an old way of saying "Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough"!
