Gisburn
Unmissable
on the A59 main road running through east Lancashire from Preston to
Skipton, Gisburn is ideally placed for the Forest of Bowland, the
Yorkshire Dales, Clitheroe, Pendle Hill and the mill towns of east
Lancashire. Formally in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Gisburn became
part of Lancashire during the redrawing of the county boundaries in
1974. To the north of the village is Gisburne Park, set in 168
acres (68 hectares) of land, this former deer park is now used as a
holiday park and private hospital. The Ribble Valley railway line
passes under the park in a 157 yard long (144m) cut-and-cover tunnel. There was a railway station at Gisburn but it was closed at the beginning of the "Beeching Axe" in 1962. The
main church here is St. Mary the Virgin and the community hub is
Gisburn Festival Hall. There is one pub here, The White Bull.
Dominating the west end of the village is Gisburn Auction Mart
where livestock as well as farm machinary is regularly sold.
