BARLEY
Barley Popular tourist village situated
between Black Moss and Ogden Reservoirs not far from Pendle Hill.
Even in winter this place is popular with visitors, many of
whom use Barley as the starting point for a walk up Pendle Hill and
many other walks around here. The large car park has a
tearoom and public toilets. There are two pubs here, the
Pendle Inn and the Barley Mow. There is Methodist Church here
providing Sunday services as well as an active club for young people.
In 2011 United Utilities, the water company for the North-West of England unearthed the remains of a 17th century cottage complete with a cat skeleton. It has been speculated that the cottage belonged to one of the Pendle Witches who were executed in Lancaster in 1612. The streams through Barley provided power for several small cotton mills that were active in the area until the late 19th century.
