ABBEYSTEAD

The Village

A small hamlet not far from the Trough of Bowland, Abbeystead takes it's name from "the site of the abbey", a short lived house
of Cistercian Monks which was established here between 1192 and 1204.
Evidence suggest that the area was inhabited during the interglacial periods during the Mesolithic Period but little record of it
survives from prior to the Norman conquest
Abbeystead made headline news for all the wrong reasons in 1984 when 16 people died in a methane gas explosion during a
demonstation of the newly built valve house at the outfall end of the Lune-Wyre Transfer Scheme.
