THE WESTMORLAND DALES

KIRKBY LONSDALE          SETTLE          KIRKBY STEPHEN          DENTDALE          GARSDALE          BARBONDALE
The 1974 county boundary changes resulted in a small part of the West Riding of Yorkshire being incorporated into the new county of Cumbria which also includes the Furness district of Lancashire, Westmoreland and Cumberland. These changes resulted in a small part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park ending up in Cumbria along with Dent and Settle. In 2016 the Yorkshire Dales National Park was extended further into Cumbria with the boundaries running close to the M6 Motorway, Kirkby Lonsdale, Kirkby Stephen and Appleby in Westmoreland. Both the M6 and the Settle to Carlisle Railway provide easy access to the Cumbrian part of the Yorkshire Dales.
