Kirkby Stephen

High Street, Kirkby Stephen.

Kirkby Stephen on the edge of the newly expanded Yorkshire Dales National Park is ideally situated for both the northern Dales and the North Pennines. In the part of Cumbria that was formally Westmorland until the county boundary changes of 1974, this market town is surrounded by sparsely populated countryside. Granted a market charter in the mid 14th century, Kirkby Stephen holds a livestock market every Monday. St. Luke's Fair or Charter Day is celebrated at the end of every October.

The town has several pubs, antique shops, restaurants and cafés. The outdoor swiming pool located in the grounds of Kirkby Stephen Grammer School is open to members of the public from May to August.

Faraday Road in the town is named after the Richard Faraday, uncle of Michael Faraday who contributed to the study of electromagnetism and electrochemistry.

The Settle to Carlisle Line has a station just over a mile (2km) from Kirkby Stephen. The South Durham and Lancashire Railway once ran through the town and a short stretch of line has been restored outside the town running from Kirkby Stephen Station operating as the Stainmore Railway.
