Appleby in Westmorland

Formally the county seat of Westmorland, a county that was abolished in the 1974 shake-up of local government, the market town is best known for the hosting of it's annual horse fair.  Held in the first week of June, gypsies and other members of the travelling community travel to Appleby to trade their horses.
   
St. Lawrence's ChurchThe town is overlooked by the privately owned largely Norman castle and the main church is St. Lawrence's, a Grade I listed building.

The economy is mainly a service and hospitality one with a number of small shops, butchers, grocers and convenience stores as well as a good selection of pubs.

Appleby Creamery produces hand-made cheeses including Eden Valley Brie.
