Cave is a little over a mile from the village of Clapham on the walk
through the nature trail. Here Fell Beck re-emerges into daylight
having plunged down Gaping Gill's main shaft high up on Ingleborough.
Access to Ingleborough Cave was first gained in 1837 when a natural
calcite dam was breached draining water from the passages. Today
visitors can enter the first 550 yards (500m) of the cave on well
maintained walkways suitable for pushchairs.
For the more
adventurous trips are available beyond the tourist trail with Clapham
Adventure, an outdoor group based in the village.
Cave was connected to the Gaping Gill system in 1983 when a team of
cave divers assisted by cavers made the difficult through trip from the
Main Shaft to the show cave entrance, an event which was captured on
film by eminent cave film maker, Sid Perou.
