To the north-east of Hawes is the
village
of Hardraw. The Pennine Way runs through the village past the Old
School House. Nearby is one of the wonders of the Yorkshire Dales,
Hardraw Force, the highest above-ground single-drop waterfall in
England. To access Hardraw Force you have to go through the Green
Dragon Inn where a small fee is payable. A path takes you through
scenic woodland and past a camping ground before you arrive at the huge
natural ampitheatre which contains the waterfall. The acoustics of the
ampitheatre has made it a place where an annual brass band competition
is held on the second Sunday of every September. July sees the Hardraw
Bash and a three day gathering of folk musicians. Regular live music is
played in the Green Dragon.
The French tightrope walker, Charles Blondin once crossed Hardraw
Force, and crossed Niagara Falls on the U.S.-Candian border a number of
times.
Hardraw Scar once existed nearby, having being washed away during a
great flood in the late 19th century.
