Operation
Gunnerside was one of a series
of operations taken by Norwegian Saboteurs during World War II to
prevent the Nazis from obtaining heavy water for their nuclear energy
project which could be used to make nuclear weapons. Along with
Operations Freshman and Grouse, Operation Gunnerside was considered one
of the most successful sabotage operations by the Special Operations
Executive. The participants trained near Gunnerside in the Yorkshire
Dales.
