Views of Gunnerside

Situated between the River Swale and Gunnerside Beck is this interesting Swaledale village, home to clockmaking, gamekeeping and farming. Lead was mined locally until the late 19th Century. The Literary Institute has a part time Post Office.
There is also a local construction industry that maintains barns and farm buildings in Swaledale. The
Kings Head pub and a Methodist chapel are also in Gunnerside.

Operation Gunnerside was one of a series of operations taken by Norwegian Saboteurs during World War II to prevent the Nazis from obtaining heavy water for their nuclear energy project which could be used to make nuclear weapons. Along with Operations Freshman and Grouse, Operation Gunnerside was considered one of the most successful sabotage operations by the Special Operations Executive. The participants trained near Gunnerside in the Yorkshire Dales.
