Ribblehead Viaduct

Steam train crossing Ribblehead Viaduct

An area of open moorland at the heads of Chapel-le-Dale and Ribblesdale, Ribblehead is dominated by the 24 arch Ribblehead Viaduct, the highlight of the Settle to Carlisle Railway.  At 440 yards (400m) long and 104 feet (32m) tall, the viaduct is the largest on the line.  To the north of the viaduct is Blea Moor Tunnel, at 2629 yards (2404m) the longest on the line.  To the south of the viaduct is Ribblehead Station where it is possible to alight to enjoy the charms of Ribblehead whether it is it's caves, walking or the Station Inn.  Camping is possible on the common moorland.  The station is also ideal for the Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk. Chartered steam trains still cross the viaduct regularly offering great photo opportunities.
The River Ribble rises here, departing on it's 75 mile (121km) journey down through Ribblesdale and the Ribble Valley before flowing out into the Irish Sea beyond Preston.
