The Ultimate Pennines

The Backbone of Britain

Known as the "Backbone of Britain" the Pennine Hills are home to some National Parks and Areas
of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Featured heavily in this website is the Yorkshire Dales National Park
which is at the heart of the Pennines.  Adjacent to the Yorkshire Dales are the North Pennines, the
Forest of Bowland and Nidderdale.  At the southern end of the Pennines is the Peak District National
Park and the South Pennine Moors.  Easily accessible from all the major conurbations of the north of
England the Pennines offer an easy escape from urban life whether it is just for the weekend or
longer.  There are plenty of walking routes available here, notably the Pennine Way long distance
footpath which runs all the way from the Peak District to just inside Scotland and also the Coast to
Coast Walk from the Cumbria to North Yorkshire coasts.  For the more energetic there is cycling and
horse riding and if you are feeling really adventurous there is paragliding, rock climbing, caving
and mine exploration.  There are of course plenty of pubs to relax in after a day's adventure.
