PEAK FOREST CANAL
One
of the most picturesque canals in England, the Peak Forest Canal skirts
the western edge of the Peak District in Cheshire and Derbyshire. It
forms part of the "Cheshire Ring" cruising route which also includes
the Macclesfield, Ashton, Rochdale, Bridgewater and Trent & Mersey
Canals. It is generally divided into two sections, the northern section
being the Lower Peak Forest Canal and the southern section, the Higher
Peak Forest Canal with the 16 Marple Locks being in between. Near
Marple Top Lock the canal joins the Macclesfield Canal. From there the
Higher Peak Forest Canal runs south to Bugsworth Basin. The Lower Peak
Forest Canal includes Marple Aqueduct and two tunnels, Hyde Bank and
Woodley. There was once another tunnel at the end of Marple Aqueduct,
Rose Hill which has been opened out. The canal fell into disuse in the
mid 20th century but was restored in the late 1960's, early 1970's, the
first major restoration of a canal. Bugsworth Basin at the southern end
of the canal remained derelict until it's restoration in 2003.
