A large
village on the edge of the Peak District, Disley is on the A6
main road between Stockport and Buxton where it runs through the Goyt
Valley. As well as the A6, the Buxton to Manchester railway line passes
through here as does the Peak Forest Canal, all of which have
contributed to the growth of the village. | Today
Disley is a "dormitary village", home to a mainly residential
population who commute daily to neighbouring towns and cities such as
Manchester and Stockport. However there is plenty to interest the
tourist here such as the Peak Forest Canal and Lyme Park. Disley has
a good selection of pubs such as the Rams Head in the village centre, a
large hotel and the White Lion with it's intriguing zebre sign,
apparently in homage to a circus zebra which died in the vicinity of
the pub. Notable residents included Lord John Hunt who led the first
successful expedition to Mount Everest in 1953. Outside the White Lion
is a Royal Mail pillar box painted gold in honour of Olympic gold
medalist, Jamie Staff (cycling) and Paralympic gold medal couple, Sarah
and Barney Storey (cycling). The A6 in Disley |
