CALDON CANAL

The Caldon Canal is an 18 mile (30km) branch canal of the Trent & Mersey Canal running from Etruria in Stoke on Trent to Froghall Wharf  just beyond the 76 yard (69m) long Froghall Tunnel.  The canal has a branch of it's own running to near Leek through a 130 yard (120m) tunnel.  There are 17 locks on the Caldon Canal taking boats of up to 72 feet long by 7 feet beam (21.95m x 2.13m).  A further 13 mile (21km) canal ran from Froghall to the small town of Uttoxeter in Staffordshire but is currently closed.  If the Uttoxeter Canal is restored to boating the restricted demensions of Froghall Tunnel will restrict the height of boats using it.
An interesting feature on the Caldon Canal is the flint mill at Cheddleton.
