Alderley Edge

Alderley Edge town centre

Alderley Edge in Cheshire is one of the most affluent towns in England and although is some way from the Peak District National Park is well worth a mention here due to it's nearby copper mines.
One of the most expensive places to live in the UK outside London, the area has attracted a number of Premier League footballers as residents along with business people and actors. Expect local prices to reflect the affluence of the area!
Above the town is the Edge, a country park administered by the National Trust. Copper was mined here during Roman times but the main period of mining activity was between 1690 and the 1920's. Cheshire County Council blocked access to the mines during the 1960's after a series of accidents by ill-prepared explorers but are now open to exploration with access controlled by the Derbyshire Caving Club. The DCC operates public open days twice a year in late April and early September when Engine Vein and Wood Mine are open to visitors.
